There are some level of changes that would lead conservatives to abandon the language. Yes it interferes with consensus. Therefore, we either choose not to make the change, or if newbies would leave under that decision, we decide who will be driven away.
There ARE some lines in the sand. People need to realize that. If there are too many, then consensus is impossible, but I don't think that there are too many.
