It's mostly obsolete today, both spoken and written, so probably
that's why it's not taught.  You'll mostly find it in texts
well > 50yo.

_Jüngling_ is also quite old-fashioned and fairy tale register.

_Bursche_ sounds like old-fashioned farmers/craftmen register but may
also be used in some dialects.

The only neutral word in the Meyer-Lübke list for me would be _Junge_.

There is also _Bub_ (southern German, i.g. Bavaria) 'boy' or and
_Bube_ 'jack (cards)' (standard language).

Ok, ok, this has nothing to do with romlangs...
