Hi, all

Hi. My name is Mike Wright. I've just joined the group, and thought I
would introduce myself.

I first got involved in Tceqli/Ceqlix/Ceqli/Txeqli starting back in
about 02/97, and off-and-on several times since then, the big
interruption being when my wife had a stroke back in 07/98.

My language background is that I was an Army translator for the
better part of twenty years, having gone through the Defense Language
Institute for Mandarin, Japanese, and Arabic (Modern Standard, with
an Egyptian flavor). I've also spent some time studying Hokkien (the
Taiwanese/Xiamen variety of Southern Min Chinese), Vietnamese,
Indonesian/Malay, and Hebrew, as well as a bit of German, Spanish,
and French. I've lived in Taiwan (20 months) and Japan (7.5 years). My
wife is a native speaker of Hokkien, and also speaks Mandarin and
Japanese.

I've been retired for almost twenty years now. Only Mandarin,
Hokkien, and Japanese are still usable. I'm very interested in
linguistics, but haven't done any formal study of it. I'm particularly
interested in Chinese "dialects" and historical phonology
(reconstruction). I do read a lot on the subject, though, and have tons
of good books.

Until recently, I spent quite a bit of time on the sci.lang and
sci.lang.japan newsgroups, but work has heated up and interfered with
my fun. I have a language-related Web page at http://
www.coastalfog.net/languages/lang_main.html.

Hope I can contribute something.

Cheers.
Mike Wright
