The system is designed to approximate the way the syllables are
spelled using kana. Note that all the syllables that are spelled with
<-y-> are written using two kana (and nowadays, the second kana is
written smaller than the first, and slightly below or off to one side,
depending on the direction of writing).

kana 1 kana 2 romanization
si /Si/ ya /ya/ sya /Sa/
si /Si/ yu /yu/ tyu /Su/
si /Si/ yo /yo/ tyo /So/

ti /tSi/ ya /ya/ tya /tSa/
ti /tSi/ yu /yu/ tyu /tSu/
ti /tSi/ yo /yo/ tyo /tSo/

di /dZi/ ya /ya/ dya /dZa/
di /dZi/ yu /yu/ dyu /dZu/
di /dZi/ yo /yo/ dyo /dZo/

In a couple of cases, there are spelling differences for homonyms:
zi /dZi/ ya /ya/ zya /dZa/
zi /dZi/ yu /yu/ zyu /dZu/
zi /dZi/ yo /yo/ zyo /dZo/

du /zu/
zu /zu/

This is a good example of the kind of historical baggage that a
conlang won't have.
