Surely its not connected with Greek <haima>? The Latin s vs Greek h does look realistic, so perhaps "sanguin-" contains a combination of elements -- but I don't really know. > I was wondering about the pronunciation of the <ngu> cluster, and > whether it was likely to be along the lines of /san-gwi-/ or /saN-wi/ .... There is no /N/ in Latin; [N] occurs as the realization of /n/ before /g/ and /k/ (written ng, nc), and as the realization of /g/ before /n/ (written gn). So we have /san-gwIs/ here, pronounced [saN-gwIs]. -- Verbogeny is one of the pleasurettes John Cowan <jcowan@hidden.email> of a creatific thinkerizer. http://www.reutershealth.com -- Peter da Silva http://www.ccil.org/~cowan
