This morning I discovered the Carrajena word for "maybe" and just thought I'd share. The word is _sedechi_ /SE'de.tSI/, and believe it or not it is from the Latin, not one of the strange Punic retensions or a Greek loan or an Arabic borrowing. This word derives from a phrase _sed et si_ "but and if" though some argue (without so much as a leg to stand on) that it derives from "but and yes" or even "but and itself" if one can be conviced that otherwise educated individuals could be so irrational in their assignmets of etymologies. The textual evidence, though slight, is quite conclusive in supporting the assignment of the above etymology. Other derivations supported by professors claiming some right to propound in the field are simply so much fancy founded on misreadings of questionable texts at best and deliberate distortions to support pet theories at worst. . . . The passage from Dr. Aatvija's book goes on in a similar vein at some length. I'll spare you the details.
