It's not like you have some fun at the party and then ask her: "Hey, shall we go to my place and have some wild sex there?" She'd probably slap you in the face. And if she didn't, she might not be worth the effort anyway. No, it's more like this: "Good heavens, I'm never going to make it to the last train! Now I'll have to spend the rest of the night at the station! Oh poor me!" "Well, don't be too worried about that, dear. Why don't we go to my place and a nice, hot cup of coffee? I can show you my stamps collection, too. And if you like, you can sleep there as well. Be sure that I'm not trying to get you anywhere! If I had a car, I'd certainly love to bring you home." "Well, okay then. I guess we could do that. We haven't much of a choice, have we?" When you finally are sitting nice and cosy at two ends of your bed-annex-couch with a hot chocolate, you will read her some of your poetry or bluff your way through an elaborate discourse about the differences between Monet and Manet. Be a good listener, too. And don't show her your stamps collection! At some point you will both be so tired that you simply fall asleep in each other's arms. After that, nature will or will not do its work. You see? It's mostly a matter of coincidence: having your left elbow at the right place, discovering at some point that the conversation has unnoticedly changed its subject to love and all its ins and outs... Of course, if somewhere during the process the lady speaks: "Please Mr. Thalmann, I am an innocent young thing, and I am definitely not waiting to be abused by a male chauvinist pig like yourself! Behave, you naughty boy!", you might as well offer her your bed right away and take the couch for yourself. > Contrary to popular belief, one can enjoy the company of a woman in > one's own home without indulging in carnal vices. For shame, man, > haven't you ever had a friend as a date for a formal occasion? I, for one, have. I've gone through situations like I described quite often. In many cases it produces interesting insights about the Monet/Manet controversy, the arts in general or other pleasant subjects, and nothing else. But those girls often became very good comrades, which is a thing I have always valued highly. In addition to that I can say that I often go to particularly important happenings as my mother's date.
