Jan van Steenbergen scripsit: > I wonder if the Romance languages also have examples of triplets: > (1) words inherited from Vulgar Latin; > (2) later borrowings from Classical Latin; > (3) later borrowings from other Romance languages. Romanian, in which the difference between (1) and (2) is very vivid, got a heavy overlay of French lexis in the 19th century. Spanish also has 3 flavors: inherited, borrowed, and a third class that is either (1) modified by (2) or (2) modified by (1), depending on which scholars you listen to. -- John Cowan <jcowan@hidden.email> http://www.reutershealth.com http://www.ccil.org/~cowan Yakka foob mog.
