I've been looking at the paradigms of "to be" in Latin and Romance in a fruitless attempt to figure out how Cardadjina conjugates this ever so improtant verb. There seems to be lots of goofiness going on here.
Infinitive Latin esse Spanish ser Portugu. ser Catalan e'sser French e^tre Occitan e`sser Italian essere Sardini. essere R-R (Sur) e`sser Rumanian a fi Sicilian essiri Present 1st sg. Lat. sum Spa. soy Por. sou Cat. so'(c) Fre. suis Occ. soi Ita. sono Sar. so`e R-R. sun Rom. si^nt Sic. sugnu Pres 2nd sg Lat. es Spa. eres Por. e's Cat. ets Fre. es Occ. e's Ita. sei Sar. ses R-R. eis Rum. es,ti Sic. si Pres 3rd sg Lat. est Spa. es Por. e' Cat. e's Fre. est Occ. es Ita. e' Sar. est R-R. ei Rum. e(ste) Sic. e' Pres 1st pl Lat. sumus Spa. somos Por. somos Cat. som Fre. sommes Occ. se'm Ita. siamo Sar. semus R-R. essan Rum. si^ntem Sic. semu Pres 2nd pl Lat. estis Spa. sois Por. sois Cat. sou Fre. e^tes Occ. se'tz Ita. siete Sar. sedzis R-R. essas Rum. si^ntet,i Sic. siti Pres. 3rd pl Lat. sunt Spa. son Por. sa(tilde)o Cat. so'n Fre. sont Occ. son Ita. sono Sar. sun R-R. ein Rum. si^nt Sic. si/sunnuWhile many of these Romance terms are clearly derived from the Latin word, many others are clearly NOT and some I'm just not quite sure about.
It would seem that only 6 of the infinitives (Cat. Occ. Ita. Sard. R-R and Sic.) come from the Latin infinitive. Whence do the otheres derive?
With the Present 1st sg it looks like 6 come from sum. With the 2nd sg and 2nd pl it looks like only 2 come from the Latin.I'm assuming that the others are suppletive forms and not out right coinages. Which verms do the other forms come from???
Adam So lift the cup of joy and take a big drink. In spite of it all it's a beautiful world. -------Suzanne Knutzen _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com
