I like "substance" better for this sense too. "Mass" has been so much abused throughout Loglan/Lojban that it means more or less whatever anybody wants it to mean.

"Fill the bowl" is an emergent property. None of the
apples does it by itself. Collective is what I understand
{lei} to be, and from your comments you seem to agree.
