It reminds me of a "proof" I saw in high school that delivered 0 = 1.
The usual way of proving 0 = 1 is dividing by zero. But mine is a valid proof. Which step do you have trouble with? Are the trailing 9's of 21.99999... different than those of 219.99999... ?
We can do Jorge's stunt more easily: x = 0.9bar 1 - x = 0.00 (...infinitude of zeros...) 001 = 0.0 {by handwaving}
I assure you it is not a stunt. That "001" you have put at the end is just crazy, there is no such "last digit" in 1-x. How many reals are there between 0.9bar and 1? What is the average of those two numbers, what do you get if you add them and divide by two? mu'o mi'e xorxes _________________________________________________________________Get faster connections-- switch toMSN Internet Access! http://resourcecenter.msn.com/access/plans/default.asp
