[9] seems like an odd choice of vowel to me; do you mean [2] or are
you using a different ASCII IPA system from me?

(As I understand it, [2] : [e] :: [9] : [E].)

Or are you using /e/ for something in the [e]~[E] area and /9/ for
something in the [2]~[9] area?

Still, the choice of symbols seemed a bit odd to me.

I was being sloppy symbolizing phonemes. What I wrote inconsistently as /e o 9/ are all meant to be mid-open, i.e. /E O 9/, though soundwise anything up to mid is fine.  Tikybau is rich in diphthongs so I think those are the best choices.  /E/ should be a little tenser than in English and /O/ should be rounded.  Some Americans merge the latter with /A/ < /Q/.
