That may have happened if you used Titus Cyberbit Basic. It supports tons of
Unicode characters, but has very poor kerning

And Arial Unicode MS has no Ethiopic script :((((((
I have similar problems at my office comp. At home I use OE6, it seems to handle different scripts according to the settings of your browser, so it permits to combine fonts; at least I have Sylfaen as my default font, but I'm able to see both Ethiopic and Hebrew.
