deus > Spanish dios: whence the /i/?

I often read that Spanish _dios_ is a descendant of Latin nom.sing.
deus -- and fair enough. But can someone explain to me how the initial
vowel in Spanish ended up being /i/? I would have expected /e/ to
survive: **deos. Is it some kind of interaction between the /e/ as a
glide and the following /u/ of _deus_?
Cheers,
Carl
