Sedere means "to sit". I had thought Luca's origin for "ser" wasn't right
to me. Apparently here's the development of "ser" from "sedere":

SEDERE > seer > ser


this is similar to verbs like "ver":

VIDERE > veer > ver

Interestingly the verb "leer" keeps the two e's instead of coaslescing
them:

LEGERE > leer
