When you use "da" you don't refer to anything. If someone says "da blanu", "something is blue", your answer will be "of course, lots of things are blue". But if someone says "ko'a blanu", "it is blue", your answer would be "what is blue?", "ko'a ki'a". With "ko'a", unlike with "da", you are _referring_ to something, not just making an existential claim.
