Re: [jboske] The ugly head of ni

la xod. cusku di'e

Would {le ni ce'u prami ce'u} mean "the amount of lover--beloved
pairings"? That would be much harder to say in some other way.

I suppose it would if 'ni ce'u broda' counts le broda, but that is not a
concept likely to be used often anyway.

When I asked John Cowan for the canonical example of ni + ce'u, that's
what he offered. Nobody complained at the time. Perhaps you could re-read
this entire thread from the beginning of this subject line, and see what
you disagree with.

I've read this whole thread, and if John said something along the lines of ni+ce'u is used for counting the number of objects which fulfill the ce'u place, then I didn't reply because I figured I had already stated my position or I didn't have a chance or I forgot. My best guess is that you are referring to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jboske/message/268, which I don't interpret as indicating that John supports ni+ce'u as counting objects. I see nothing wrong with his proposal there, but in practice I don't think that it is ever necessary to use ni like that (with ce'u and with that meaning).
