No, "cabal" indeed < "qabbalah", via French.  The Talmud, of course,
is a hypertextual representation of an open debate focusing
on a sacred text that went on for centuries.  Which seems very
appropriate.

Note the distinct adjectives "Talmudic" (pertaining to the T.)
and "talmudistic" (convoluted, indecipherable, pettifogging),
though m-w.com does not recognize the difference.
