Most English noun phrases require "about" to be gramatically correct or have the correct meaning, as in "I know about the accident" or "I know about John" or "I know the broken windows". Others don't, as in "I know the answer". Also keep in mind that "about" is often an abbreviation for "something about", as in "I know something about the answer".
