Well, this particular one is just a Latin borrowing of Germanic *karlaz (no long vowels).
AFAIK, no cognates of *karlaz are known outside Germanic, but the Germanic form corresponds to that of PIE o-stems in Germanic, and the Latin "Carolus" is indeed simply borrowed into Latin as a 2nd declension (o-stem) masculine, with an epenthetic /o/ in the midst of the Germanic /rl/ cluster.
