Itself ultimatly from a Vulgar Latin "hispaniolus" (< "hispanus" + dim. suffix "-olus").
The natural development of the adjective "hispanicus" might have become something like *espa�ego (?) in Castilian Spanish (though I suppose it might have been learnedly reanalyzed as *espanico, too), and the Latin "Hispani" would have become *espanos.
