And there is your hint.  Greek _koilos_ means `hollow' in both senses.

NB that Latin 'sky' is with _ae_, as testified by the rising diphthong
in French _ciel_.  The Medieval _oe_ spelling was influenced by the
Greek 'hollow' word.
