Hi Adam, I'm not too much of an Arabic expert so I'll go by gut feeling ;-): <<Mavali - traitor < Ar. muwali <<Mavjada - traitor < Ar. Muwallad I like <mavali> <<Magmau - velvet < Ar. makhmal <<Mugmau - velvet < Ar. mukhmal both 'feel' fine. <<Marreju - hammer < LL matrellus <<Mizdraga - hammer < Ar. miTraqa That depends on the nature of the Arabic influence on your conlang. If skill in handicrafts was perfected by the Arabs in contact then I think you ought to use the Arabic derived term - you could have <marreju> in relic dialects? <<Minoru - minor < Lt. minorus <<Mindru - minor < Lt. minor I quite like <mindru> - could you talk me through its development, i.e. the sound changes involved? <<Miñera - mine < OFr. miniera < LL minera <<Medaju - mine < LL metallum Both are fine! <<Medigu (native word) - doctor, surgeon < Lt. medicus <<Medicu (learned) - medcal, healing, medicinal < Lt. <<medicus <<Medichinali (semi-learned) - medicinal < Lt. <<medicinalis Your typo *medcal got me thinking. Is a sound change possible where the unstressed /i/ of VL was reduced and dropped early on and subsequently the <dc> cluster changed to something like *mechu (where <ch> is English or Spanish ch)? Just a thought. Dan
