If i'm remembering correctly, Adam, from my very rudimentary arabic 
course, (both Fuhshah and Masri (Quran & Egyptian dialects)) the yi 
is the first person conjugation, effectively, ie.  yidris (I study).  
Then again, I could be completely off, but I think that's close to 
the truth of the matter.
