Jan van Steenbergen scripsit: > Either I am very badly informed, or C.Ph.E. Bach's first name *was* Carl, not > Karl. Carl Philipp Em(m)anuel Bach (I'm not sure about the second _m_). > Same thing with our queen's husband, prince Claus, who died recently. Well, I searched German pages only (to the best of Google's ability to sort them) and found them about equally divided between Carl and Karl Philipp Bach (I left out the E-word to avoid problems with its spelling). So maybe we are dealing with a problem like that of Shakespeare's name, which was spelled numerous ways in his own time: my favorite is "Shaxper". -- John Cowan http://www.ccil.org/~cowan cowan@hidden.email To say that Bilbo's breath was taken away is no description at all. There are no words left to express his staggerment, since Men changed the language that they learned of elves in the days when all the world was wonderful. --_The Hobbit_
