18.0 Relative Clauses and Resumptive Pronouns

John saw the book WHICH Bill bought (gap).
Note that "the book" is the object of the verb "saw", as well as the
implied object of the verb "bought". The gap is required by English
syntax.
The second kind of relative clause, which is found in a slight majority of natural languages, uses a relative conjunction plus a resumptive pronoun, as in the following example:
John saw the book WHICH Bill bought IT.
sts: i was firmly convinced that "WHICH" is the object of the verb
"saw", and that there is not gap. therefore, the sentence "John saw
the book WHICH Bill bought IT." sound absolutely ungrammatical to my
german ears.
lesson20: Hawks like these quickly mature. Nusa xagonka gekoji bate lejunti caynsatse.sts: oh my... only the katanda text made me understand what was meant. i thought that hawks like/love these... but why singular "mature" and why an adverb "quickly" instead of "quick"... "hawks like this quick mature". :)
btw, how do we say "time flies like an arrow"? lesson20: Michelle's tears ruined our tiger skin in the hallway. Kibe kosi tumi tendaw xedu fuskinza mi tehi tunende moswa? sts: and what would be "instead of you"? lesson20: Did you learn who imitated the teacher outside the classroom? Kibe pi kosinga tumi tendaw pi batenza tehi kobyo bufudi koto? sts: is the "pi" necessary in here? lesson20: It's unlikely that we'll need a smaller cage in case the owls are immature. Fobe goy xenidunda gami caykxe bubinsa xeku va caytende buxagonta leveji.sts: i don't understand how a cage can be in some way obligatory for us. the existance of the cage? it's having the cage that is obligatory for us, so something like "xenidunda gami jatenda caykxe...". what do you think?
lesson20: It's barely possible that the air force will close the airport because of the ice. Sube goy bupegompa cizusto cinye vakxe bumeze.sts: have you ever noticed that "bupegompa" means "to close", whereas "bupedimpa" means "to move near/close ..."? in both cases there is "close", and in both cases there is "pe". seemingly english and katanda have been invented by the same linguist. ;)
lesson20: The student body is starting to talk about the low ceiling in the student dining room. Desa tweda kocasto cikxe bucinsa dindu futo te gekocabyo. sts: "student body" = "cinze kocabyanto" ;) ps: xekunta lisispaw mi katanda.
