hi!while reading the lessons and the reference manual of the katanda language, i made some notes that i wanted to post into this group in order to discuss them, if you want to.
here we go: ram: the paper BY Smith ("by" = 'having Smith as agent') sts: has ram seen matrix? lesson7: [Note that we did not use "di" in the above sentence because it would link to the verb "sesinta", and the meaning would be 'Are the people generous in that penthouse?'. Instead, we used the open noun form "dindu" so that "in that penthouse" modifies "the people". This is a subtle but important distinction.] sts: *open noun form "dindu" -> open adjective form lesson8: like "I have the table that you want it", where "it" refers to "table". In Katanda, the resumptive pronoun MUST be supplied - gaps are not allowed. sts: but "that" is already "it" in a relative clause in english, isn't it? lesson8: I remind you that I'm using the telephone at the restaurant. Sa pesimba mi tumi xonfa mi taspu di funye.sts: i expected "dindu funye". with "di funye" i would think that it's a mobile that he uses at the restaurant, but not a telephone in the restaurant.
lesson8: Imagine a room full of colored carpets and heavy black tables. Vesindoy to va bitsandu gevokxe myu ne gevozwe bumyu funsa.sts: i imagine "imagine" as something more active, so i would use "vesinzoy". "vesindoy" seems to me like "be imagining!". is my interpretation wrong?
For example, it is not possible to say "John quickly opened and closed the door", where "quickly" modifies only "opened" sts: fascinating! i wasn't aware of this limitation in natural languages. :) ram: The unfocused P-s "tentasni" will mean 'state' or 'condition'.sts: i don't understand why this is logical. why the capability of having a relationship is a "state" or "condition"? isn't it something like "role"?
ram:In other words, even though we might be tempted to do so, we can't use "ma" and "mya" to create the last two examples. If we want to use the word meaning 'enjoyment', we must use either "lisisni" with no arguments or "lisisnaw" with both arguments. It's not possible to specify just one of the arguments.
sts: i'm surprised that ram accepted this 'lack'. lesson9: tune - instead of, rather than, in place of, in lieu of tunenda - substitute for, replace, supplant, take the place of, be a substitute/replacement for tunende - instead of, rather than, in place of, in lieu ofsts: hm. conjunctions doesn't have a part of speach, do they? i mean, does "tune" have an implied default suffix like kosi -> kosinda?
lesson9: The marketplace is slowly filling with greedy people. Sa mabitsamba penye gebyo busesinto bucaynsatse.sts: would it be the same to say: "Sa bitsanga penye gebyo busesinto bucaynsante."?
lesson9: Did you explain to the linguist that the library is closed? Kibe koda tumi tabyo bupegonta kovu.sts: the question mark is missing. btw: is "bupegonta" the same as "mabupegompa"?
lesson9: This looks like a duck but it's a chicken. Vetenda junti naji va nane batsa nahi fuji va. sts: doesn't this mean "this looks like a duck, but a duck is a chicken?" nahi -> juhi ? tudetuzunidevomu = 2.2 - i3.4 sts: + i3.4 zutudevomu = 0 - i2.4 sts: + i2.4 We can also handle noun phrases that contains both counts and measures: sts: contains -> contain? ram:If we want to create versions of the English verbs that actually measure a state, such as "to time" as in "He timed the performance" or "to weigh" as in "He weighed the rice", then we need to augment the basic state. In the interlingua, we will accomplish this with the special CCM "-st-". When added to a root, it will convert the word to one with the meaning 'to determine or measure the root state'. The resulting argument structure will be AP/F-d. Here are some examples:
sts:by this you change the system. you add a ccm to change the meaning, but normally ccms have the function to change the transitivity and dinamic of a verb, so the "grammar" of the verb while "to measure" seems to me too semantical to claim it to be a ccm. why did you do this? it seems to me that "nsasta" is a classifier.
