Rick,
I think there should be different terms for the different kinds of seas. The two main kinds that come to mind are 1) whole bodies of (salt) water that are smaller than oceans, and 2) areas or regions of oceans that have for some reason come to be known as seas, but which have no real boundaries (similar to the situation with constellations).
How does one distinguish between seas and oceans? By the relative size of nearby landmasses?
How about between seas and lakes? Are seas saltwater and lakes fresh water?
