OTOH, if y and w disappear, we'll lose all those neat French (and other) borrowings like bwa, dwa, fwa, kwa. At this point I'm talking myself into letting i and u participate in falling diphthongs only, and using y and w for rising ones. I'm also thinking of being a little more discriminating in borrowing words that many of us think put a bit of a strain on pronunciation. This is all too subjective for me to put a name to any prospective rule I'm thinking of, but I feel that 'swa' is much easier to pronounce than 'swe,' for example, and I've tended to bring some combos like that in from Mandarin, mostly in an attempt to have lots of Mandarin words. Maybe I've gone too far with that.
