"Be" frustrates me, because it seems to want badly to be unstressed,
as in:
Spun bedan pani.
And it seems like any other Ceqli compound word doesn't have that
effect, at least on me. Xyendom calls for even stress.
And it's in the position it is because I glommed it from
Mandarin "bei" and it goes in front of the verb. However, that's as
far as it goes, because the Mandarin word doesn't switch the
positions of the subject and object as in Ceqli. It actually means, I
think, "receive," so the actual way it looks is:
You hit me. I bei(receive) you hit.As I recall, "bei" means something like "suffer," which is why the Mandarin construction doesn't truly work like an IE passive: it involves a negative impact from someone else's action. (Though Mao-era translators overused it in translating Russian passive participles a bit too slavishly.)
...
Not that I can think of any right now. But, how about the bey
compound to replace the be prefix? It will do away with all that
stress problem.
I'm all for avoiding unnecessary stress.Steve
