By the way, sometimes when Mandarin won't fit the morphology, a Sino-Japanese version of the "same" morpheme might. For example Mandarin <nan2>, "male", wouldn't work, but Sino-Japanese <dan> would. (Native Japanese <otoko> doesn't work, either.)
