Aha! Thank you Steven!
Stephan
The deictics, of which there are five series (along with the 1) personal pronouns (-pa), 2) genitive/possessive pronouns (-foy), 3) demonstrative (-si), 4) locatives (-swa), and 5) temporals (-kyo)) use the number morphemes to tell which grammatical persons are included. 1st person = speaker 2nd person = listener 3rd person = someone other than speaker or listener 4th person = 1st + 2nd persons = speaker and listener 5th person = 1st + 3rd persons = speaker and other(s), but excluding the listener 6th person = 2nd + 3rd persons = listener and other(s), but excluding the speaker 7th person = 1st + 2nd + 3rd persons = speaker and listener and other(s) So "jasi" is the 6th person form of the demonstrative pronoun, which means it points to something by the listener or by someone other than the speaker or listener. English doesn't make such a detailed descrimination, but "jasi" is one of the meanings of 'that/those'. (2nd and 3rd persons are also 'this/those'.) This is all covered in chapter 10.0 Deixis in the Reference Manual. http://www.eskimo.com/%7Eram/lexical_semantics.html Steven |
