Hi all, I've looked online for a while now, and I can't find ANY site that maps sound changes from MSA to dialects, e.g. the change from MSA [dZ] to Egyptian [g], MSA [q] to Maltese [?], or MSA [k] to Iraqi [tS]. Is there some kind of list online that shows some more of these sound changes? Can someone at least give me some more examples of these sound changes among dialects??? I appreciate your help. Nathaniel
Well, i'm pretty sure that it's actually [g] > [(d)Z], with Egyptian being conservative with this one consonant.
[q] > [?] is pretty common, i think, also found in Egypt. The reason i wrote [(d)Z] above with the [d] in parentheses is because i'm pretty sure that in Syria and Lebanon (maybe the whole Levant?) it's pronounced just [Z].
Around the Persian Gulf, they pronounce [q] voiced. That's all i can think of at the moment. -Stephen (Steg) "alSayf, kasayf 'abyaD..." ~ sally caves
