St Augustine (354-430 AD) observed that Africans did not
distinguish long and short vowels: 'Afrae aures de
correptione uocalium uel productione non iudicant' ['African
ears cannot distinguish the shortening of vowels from their
lengthening'].

Which is good to know for those playing in the African
arena.
