Boundaries of Romance

How far does a language have to change until it is no longer a Romance language? I would 
say that my conlang Tahian (Germanic sound shifts and Uralic vowel harmony) has gone 
that far, but what about Rhaeto-Romance? Are there any essential components of 
"Romance" without which it is no longer Romance?
