Some years(?) back someone sent a message in Dutch to which several responses were given, in Dutch. I don't believe anyone had realized how many on the list spoke (or at least typed) Dutch. Someone suggested that Dutch should therefore be made the official language of the list. The suggestion was greeted with good humor and it was agreed that Dutch would be official, but all list messages would continue to be in English. Somewhere along the way the strong Sweedish contengent on the list started pushing for recognition since there were several non-Swedes competent to post in Swedish as well, and the suggestion stuck. It was also agreed that eventhough all list traffic was to remain in English, English would never be an "official" language, since English is already the official language of everything else. I made the claim for Taiwnese several months to a year later after I learned that one other list member could post in Taiwanese. And since it *is* the most beautiful language (despite the doubts of the other user) I have hence forth insisted that Taiwanese is the True official language. It's all meant in fun. Silly? Sure, but what use is an on-going gag if it isn't silly.
