"Prakrit" simply means vernacular, i.e. an Indian language other than Sanskrit.

"Sanskrit" means "perfected" i.e. codified: it is the language of Hindu holy poetry as frozen by grammarians. Its pre-Sanskrit form is called Vedic.

To get back to your question, perhaps your informant was referring to Pali, the language of Buddhist scripture.
