If "reads" is a different verb from "more reads", then it should be enough of a change all by itself:
5a. John (more reads) novels vs. John reads novels.
*John reads novels more than he reads them.
This doesn't work, so "more reads" can't be different from "reads", it just shows where the comparison is. The same is true of "more novels" vs. "novels", etc.
