I wasn't aware that syllables with internal "w" or "y" were based on the syllables without those letters; I thought they were completely separate.

I don't see any problems with the spelling conventions you and Larry have come up with. 
Will the mathematical symbols e.g. 'e', 'i', pi, be treated strictly as letters or will they be treated more like the numbers they represent?
