Does insecure pretty much mean 'vulnerable'?
It's a perception that one is vulnerable, perhaps, with possibly no relation at all with one's true vulnerability.
Webster's Third New International Dictionary has:
lacking security
a : not confident or sure : UNCERTAIN
b : not effectually guarded, protected, or sustained: exposed to danger : UNSAFE
c : not tightly fastened : not firmly; fixed in position : SHAKY
d : not highly stable or well-adjusted : lacking likelihood of permanence or success : UNSTABLE, UNSURE
I would use only the first meaning (a) for "insecure", with the other three falling under "unsecure", but the relevant equivalent is 'lacking confidence', thus "un-self-confident".
Can one be insecure about something not part of himself? In other words, is the "self" part of my paraphrase necessary for the meaning?
