I don't think the triplets "ci", "ca", "cu" and "sta", "stay", "staw"
are too close to their mates within each group. They are the sort of
words that people naturally stress precisely to make quite clear which
they mean; and there is some mnemonic value in having them follow a
pattern. We have similar kinds of patterns in the Romance languages,
at least for the immediate and the proximate, if not the distal. But
it is a balancing act, I'll grant. ---larry

FWIW, I think a triplet like mi vi li, for example, is a lot worse than ci ca cu.  Somehow, differing consonants are less hearable than differing vowels.
