Thanks.  I think I've got it now:

zer person associated with root word non-professionally
cen person associated with root word professionally
so saycen is scientist, sayzer is an amateur scientist. I'll go with it. I think my biggest problem with pro is that it's not a great phonetic form for a suffix, and that it can't take sex endings.
