I like this idea, too. A vowel, that could be
pronounced either "ö" or "ü", maybe written "@" (or any other
ascii).

Would you consider adding a couple of extra basic vowels to the language?
Say, the rounded German vowels ö and ü? Just something to increase the number
of possible syllables in the language without increasing the number of
diphthongs.

That's
exactly what I did when I created the current
morphemes. The only exceptions are words that are used
frequently, such as "si", "to", "sa", etc, even though their classifiers
appear in only a few words.
